ARTIST INTERVIEW: KLWN CAT

At just 16 years old, producer Klwn Cat from Southern California is already bringing in over 10k monthly listeners on Spotify. Music has been a consistent force in the background of his life for as long as he can remember, but his work in production was catalyzed solely by messing around with friends in the studio.

Growing up Klwn Cat was pushed into playing instruments through his school band, but never felt a true connection between himself and the instruments. It was around 12 years old when Klwn Cat found himself searching “chill rap songs” on Google when he strolled across two projects that changed his outlook on music forever. Strolling across Earl Sweatshirt's Chum, and Tyler, the Creator's Yonkers sparked the love for hip-hop Klwn Cat has today and allowed him to venture into the many dimensions hip-hop has to offer. He initially joined the music space in an attempt to help his friends make some “ambient-sounding beats,” and has been heavily interested in music production since.

Industry impact-wise, Klwn Cat pulls a range of influence from Madlib's diverse discography, SadhuGold's experimentation, and August Fanon's ability to craft normal samples into unorthodox beats. Creatively, Klwn Cat pays a lot of respect to these artists for their aid in the evolution of his production style.

In the upcoming years, Klwn Cat is interested in forming a group. Admiring some of the greats like Griselda and Slum Village, he wants to be the next to carry on this supportive group tactic of the hip-hop industry. While he continues to strive towards working with industry professionals who have truly made their mark in the music space, Klwn Cat’s currently working on dropping a handful of projects in the upcoming months.

After dropping his latest EP in October of 2022, Vox in Rama, keep an eye out for an album from Klwn Cat and Matt Draugos dropping in late December. Klwn Cat shares that this project is filled with insane bars, beats, and features, yet incorporates a very emotional sense of vulnerability lyrically. I highly recommend checking out Klwn Cat’s discography and following him along his journey. With such a large audience pool and music connection base at 16 years old, it’s apparent he’s on the come-up.
